“If you wait for the perfect moment when all is safe and assured, it may never arrive.”
Maurice Chevalier
What is an item in your pantry or refrigerator that you always have on hand? Everyone has a go-to. Mine is cheese. My husband loved snacking on cheese and crackers in the afternoons or during movie nights; it is something of him that became something of me. Sharp white cheddar, creamy havarti, or blue crumbles are ever-present, but my all time favorite is Gruyere. It can be a bit pricey, so I tend to save it for a special occasion.
Answering my hankering one night, I decided to bust open the Gruyere anyway; why wait when the present moment would suffice. When I opened the package, a tint of green and blue bordered the edges of the block and veined its way into the center. I definitely had waited too long, for now, it was inedible. I wasted weeks waiting for the right time to enjoy something as simple as eating cheese, but obviously this is less about cheese and more so about living in the moment.
Each day is a doorway leading us to something more. Thich Nhat Hanh wrote, “the present moment is the only moment available to us, it is the door to all moments.” The threshold of each new day provides opportunity and invites us to live even while grieving. Every moment of every day suggests that we walk boldly through. Every moment is a special occasion, one to be lived and celebrated. If we choose to remain at the entrance, “mountains will not be climbed,” Chevalier says, “races won, or lasting happiness achieved.” And cheese will not be enjoyed!
There is still so much life to be lived, so do so without guilt or remorse. Live with love and in honor for those we’ve lost. In Esther 4:14, she writes that “Perhaps this is the moment for which you were created.” We were God’s first, and I trust in His plan.
Feel the breath in your lungs, the ground beneath your feet, and the thumping of your heart. You are loved in every moment.
What are you waiting for?
