"Your life is your story. Write well. Edit often."
Susan Statham
The second semester of the 2024-2025 school year starts in less than a week. Students will return with a blank slate; all that happened in the first two quarters are archived. They’ll get to begin again with new intentions and revitalized aspirations. So, as you begin a new year, a new chapter, what are you archiving, what are you bringing forward, and where do you intend to go?
Although I will always grieve my husband, I am ready to leave behind the weight of death. I am putting down the assumptions others may have of me as a widow. I am also tucking away the need to replicate what our lives would have been if Jim was still here. The mirror of my mind will no longer reflect what was; therefore, I am preparing to become the author of a new story.
My heart still yearns to love, so I am bringing forward all the love I had for him. In Matthew 12:3-4, the Gospel says, “For the mouth speaks, what the heart is full of”. My intention then is to create a symbiotic relationship between my thought patterns, my words, and my actions that reflect love. Everything I felt for Jim, I will now pour into others.
Going forward, I intend to look for new adventures and to say “yes” even if it is a bit terrifying! I am the only one that can live my life and fulfill the purpose that has been planned for me. Pastor, T.D. Jakes said that, “No matter where you are in life right now, know this; God put you on this earth to fulfill the promise he has predestined for your life.” Jim is the love of my life, and love is inextinguishable! His terminal diagnosis fueled his desire to live fully, and he modeled what I now need to do, which is to live well what’s left of mine.
Irene C. Kassorla wrote that, “You must have control of the authorship of your own destiny; the pen that writes your life story must be held in your own hand.” As survivors, we are enriched by our loved ones. Welcome the fresh start that promises happiness, spontaneity, and love.
Write, edit, rewrite, and hold tight for the plot twist!
